Nothing better than go shopping to the exclusive Paris Boutiques...

____________________________________________________________

Every neighborhood in Paris reflects a unique attitude and style, which adds to the appeal of shopping in this fashion capital. Designer extravagance and haute couture characterize avenue Montaigne and rue Faubourg St-Honoré. Classic sophistication pervades St-Germain, and avant-garde style dresses up the Marais. The area around Les Halles exudes hip.

Paris's top department stores offer both convenience and style. Most are open Monday through Saturday from about 9:30 AM to 7 PM, and some are open until 10 PM one weekday evening. All six major stores have multilingual guides, international welcome desks, détaxe offices, and restaurants. Most are on the Right Bank, near the Opéra and the Hôtel de Ville; the notable exception is Au Bon Marché, on the Left Bank.

Paris's open-air food markets number more than 70 and are among the city's most colorful attractions. Many sell cheese, and the variety is always astounding. The lively, and somewhat chaotic, atmosphere that reigns in most markets makes them a sight worth seeing, even if you don't need to buy anything. Every quartier (neighborhood) has at least one, although many are open only a few days each week. Sunday morning, till 1 PM, is usually a good time to go; they are likely to be closed on Monday.

Paris's main flower market is in the heart of the city on the Ile de la Cité (métro Cité), between Notre-Dame and the Palais de Justice. It's open every day. On Sunday, it hosts a bird market. Colorful flower markets are held beside the Madeleine church (métro Madeleine, open Monday--Saturday 9 AM--9 PM and alternate Sundays 9:30 AM--8:30 PM) and on place des Ternes (métro Ternes, open Tuesday--Sunday).

Paris's 19th-century commercial arcades, called passages, are the forerunners of today's shopping mall. Glass roofs, decorative pillars, and inlaid mosaic floors make these spaces real architectural gems. In 1828, they numbered 137, of which only 24 are left. The major arcades are in the 1 and 2 arrondissements on the Right Bank. Shops range from the avant-garde (Gaultier and Yuki-Torii designs in the luxurious Galerie Vivienne) to the genteel (embroidery supplies and satin ribbons at Le Bonheur des Dames in the passage Jouffroy). Dusty curiosity shops abound in the arcades, offering rare stamps, secondhand books, and much more.

Art galleries are scattered throughout the city. Contemporary art galleries are clustered near the Centre Pompidou, the Picasso Museum, the Opéra Bastille, and rue Louise Weiss near the Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand in the 13. Around St-Germain, galleries are more traditional, and works by Old Masters and established modern artists dominate the galleries around rue du Faubourg St-Honoré and avenue Matignon. To help you plot your gallery course, get a free copy of the map published by the Association des Galeries; it's available at most Paris galleries.

The scenic open-air bookstalls along the Seine sell secondhand books, prints, and souvenirs. Numerous bookshops---specializing in a wide range of topics including art, film, literature, and philosophy---are found in the scholarly Latin Quarter and the publishing district, St-Germain-des-Prés.

Shopping couldn't get more chic than on avenue Montaigne, where international haute couture houses like Chanel, Dior, Nina Ricci, Céline, Valentino, Max Mara, Genny, Krizia, Escada, Thierry Mugler, Hanae Mori, Emanuel Ungaro, and Prada show their wares. You'll also find accessories by S.T. Dupont, Loewe, and Louis Vuitton. Many of the boutiques are housed in exquisite mansions with wrought-iron gates in front. Neighboring rue François 1 and avenue George V are also lined with many designer boutiques, including Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga.

When hunting for bargains, watch for the word soldes (sales). The two main sale months are January and July, when the average discount is 30%--50% off regular prices. Also look for goods marked dégriffé---designer labels, often from last year's collection, for sale at deep discount.

Monoprix and Prisunic are French dime stores, with branches throughout the city, that stock a little of everything---toothpaste, groceries, toys, typing paper, and bath mats. Both chains carry inexpensive children's clothes and are good places to stock up on good wine.

Credit Cards are widely used in France. Even the flea market is likely to honor plastic for purchases of more than [eur]15.3. Visa is the most common and preferred card, followed closely by MasterCard/EuroCard. American Express, Diners Club, and Access are also accepted in the larger international stores.

A value-added tax of 19.6%, known in France as the TVA or taxe sur la valeur ajoutée, is imposed on most consumer goods. Non--European Union residents, ages 15 and over, who stay in France and/or the EU for less than six months can reclaim part of this tax. You may opt to be reimbursed by check, but a refund credited directly to your credit card is the easiest way to receive your money.
